""Long range rifles are chambered for an assortment of popular cartridges. The .270 Winchester shooting a 130 grain bullet has long been the standard of comparison for long range rifle cartridges. A .270 with this weight bullet is nearly ideal as a general purpose long range rifle. But the .243 Winchester with 95 grain bullets, 6mm Remington with 95-100 grain bullets, .25-06 with 100 grain bullets, 6.5mm Rem. Mag. with 120 grain bullets, 6.5x68 with 140 grain bullets, .270 WSM with 140-150 grain bullets, 7x64 with 140 grain bullets, .280 Remington with 140 grain bullets, 7mm Rem. SAUM and 7mm Rem. Mag. with 150 grain bullets, .300 Rem. SAUM with 165 grain bullets, .300 WSM and .300 Win. Mag. with 165-180 grain bullets, .300 Wby. Mag. with 200 grain bullets, .300 Ultra Mag. with 200 grain bullets, 8x68S with 170 grain bullets, and 8mm Rem. Mag. with 170-180 grain bullets all have a similar trajectory (assuming bullets with similar ballistic coefficients). These cartridges and loads all offer muzzle velocities of 3000 fps to about 3150 fps. There are other cartridges and loads that have similar trajectories, but those named above are representative of typical long range hunting cartridges.""

That (50 yards) would be true here too for hunting in the woods.
I hunted one farm this past year and was field hunting there for the most part. My longest shot was 200yds dead nuts in the boiler room with the 243 Model-99 and I'm using Federal Premium 95gr BT's with it and as well with my 243 Remmy. Next year will be my 1st year using my Browning 270 on Deer and I'll be using 130gr Federal Premium BT's with it.
Thou I don't consider 300 yards "long range", he is right on the $$$ thou, as there is only a very slight difference with those two rifle/ammo combos ballistically. I don't have any 2nd thoughts or even have to think when switching between the 243's and the 270, as long as I stay with that ammo combo.
BTW, when I hunt my new favorite spot there, I park my ass next to an old Chicken Coop which may be 40yds max from the road and shoot across the Field. It's bout 150yd facing straight ahead to the fence row and I could have a max distance of around 300 to 350 yards to the right and left of that the way the Field is layed out. The Deer have a major bedding area accross the fence on the upper hill side and I know exactly where they cross.
There hain't been a Chicken in that Coop in prolly 20 years or more, so any smell is long gone; it was cleaned out and has been used for storage for prolly the last 15 or so years. All I gotta do now is get some of the Farmer's "stuff" moved out that one side of the Coop (which is very well constructed) and I'll be shitting in some really high cotton at my "Coop-De-Hill" hunting spot.
Screw those dumb bass tards that say "hunt deeper and harder", Ol 99er invests in good rifles, premium ammo, finally decent scopes (Muellers), likes to hunt smarter, and have some damn fun whilst I'm doing it !! LOL
Now, tell me exactly why I should leave VA, spend prolly close to $500 by the time all is said & done, and drive back to PA to hunt, where there is at least 50% (prolly closer to 75%) less Deer if I'm real damn lucky ??

hunt farther in and harder bla bla bla.Who the heck wants to go farther in and hunt harder at our age?
The hellians grew up on 30/30's but didn't like them.I took one out one time and dropped a buck on the spot.Told them that 30/30 is fine.
To be honest I doubt I could make a 200 yard shot.My tops in pa is probably about 150.

I didn't mind the 30\30, I was just ready for a higher caliber and I love the savage 270, its sited in year in year out and good to use for bear too. 150 grain is great for Pa IMO but if I was out where Deadeye was in Montana and such I would go to a different grain.
