Strategy to get those smart Eastern Coyotes

The coyotes will get in direct line with the speaker first...Then they will circle down wind and make that constant arc they do and come into the wind and caller to see if it's the real thing.. Hopefully they will make their arc above me now and will not smell me.. I will be using a rifle with a Muller Scope.. if this should work I should see all of this developing as they work the speaker and then start to make their arc..I can shoot them then with the 17 CF at 250, 200, 100 or 50 yards when they make their arc up wind of me now..Instead of them coming to the direct line with the speaker and into the wind at the same time.... I will sit in the fence row or tree line and not in the field since they will make the arc in the field and not run into the fence row... If I sit out in the field they may run into me and see me first in the field...
This also opens up lands that I normally would not hunt since the wind was blowing in the wrong direction..the ideal situation for this is when you walk into a field and the wind is blowing in your face...Normally I would hunt this farm only if the wind was blowing away from me...
Hope you get the jest of this...By the way this should also work for red fox too...
Now you have smart coyotes and you have smart coyotes. this is how you bag smart coyotes...They always get in direct line with the loudest part of the speaker...make them work that speaker by facing it up wind.. However you be waiting for them 200 yards down wind of that speaker when they make their arc and come into the wind..

I do want you to remember this set up for big Virgina farms. The largest the land you need to make the coyote work for you..
However don't forget to hunt the other way too...Speaker pointing down wind just say on a ravine going up or down a mountain. You the shooter setting up crosswind on the side of that ravine...Coyote will get in line with the speaker and come into the wind.. However you will be able to pick em off with a rifle or a shotgun from the crosswind position.
Also you will hear hunters say the coyotes just started barking or howling at me and would not come in...When this happens hit them with the Coyote Pup Distress...Some people say do what the coytoes do to you. Me the Coyote Pup and Powerdoggs Coyote pup is probably one of he most deadliest calling sounds in the East.... Just remember that...They most times will come into the wind... However they always get in direct line with your calling first...So use that when using electronics.. Problem is they, Virginia coyotes...Will also get in direct line with the people mouth calling too.. If the wind is blowing toward the coyotes...It's over......
So much to know here in the East...However you start reading the land and knowing the land your hunting on you have an upper hand.....
Now remember still need to do the silent gaps too like we have discussed before...(6 to 8 minutes of silence between calls)Still got to play with their brain...See so many things to take into consideration getting one of them there Easterners....

Hemlock...We also want you to get one of them their Easterners too....
See our coyotes are mammals just like us... You know how someone tries to yank your chain...Get you all upset so you get mad and lower your guard.. so to speak... That what you have to do to our Pa and the Virgina coyotes. You have to yank their chain, get them so upset, that they come in and want to whip or whop the other coyote that has ventured into their turf..
Yanking a coyote chain is easy:
Do just two plain HOWLS: Now remain on stand and be silent for 8 minutes.. make sure your in shooting position and always ready because coyotes will and sometimes come to just a plain howl.. They can show up within minutes.
After the 8 minutes of silence: Do a Coyote Pup Distress for 1 full minute...Now again remain on stand and be silent for about 8 minutes...
After the 8 minutes of silence do a food sound, woodpecker, jackrabbit, cottontail distress, for one full minute...
Now again remain on stand silent for about 8 minutes....
If you know how to do a KIYI or have that on your electronic caller... Let that rip for one full minute...Again remain silent for 8 minutes...
If you know how to do a female Ivitation howl or have that on your caller do two of those...and then remain silent for 8 full minutes.
You can do the pup again for 1 full minute and remain silent for 8 minutes...
See what your doing is playing with all the Alpha, Beta (Bravo) Charley coyotes in the pack mind...They do not like when other coyotes from other packs come into their area... So your telling them...I'm coming into your area... They get upset and then about even up to the 45 minute mark they come in for a looks see...Remember they will not howl at you in Pa...All of a sudden there they are just looking at you... Some men miss them they can't beleive a coyote has just came into their calling....
If you know there are coyotes in the area and you do this... Chances are your going to call them in...If your shooter are set up in the right spot or your set up in the right spot that they do not smell any of you.. Your probably going to get a shot..
The only Bark that I will do at a coyote is the Male Coyote Challenge and I only do that about the 35 minute time frame when playing with their brain. See barking usually means you have been had......If they start howling at you from afar or barking...Go right to coyote pup distress sounds always... This will make them lower their guard and come in.
Summary: If you set up in the right spot and have them work the call and then come into the wind.
If your in the right spot they do not smell you when they are coming into the wind...
And you play with their brain like this... I might see your name as a person who killed a coyote in the great Mosquito Creek hunt......
Good Luck...Go Get Them Coyotes.... Start To Yank Their Chain A Bit!!!!!

Can be done on an Open Reed Call if your practice... However new caller should get the Primos KIYI call...remove the mouth piece of the Primos KIYI. Now make it sing like a dog that just got hit by a car and is heading for the front porch and is telling everyone around him OH DOES THAT HURT In canine howling and crying...

hemlock it could be two things: One they were not there
Or
The wind gust up to 40 MPH. They can't hear your calls once the wind starts to whip past 20 MPH. You have to call louder and make your stands closer together..
However here is something I stumbled on in Windy conditions...Just keep this in the back of your mind....You need to still watch the down wind side...
However terrain...You have the Windward Side and the Leeward Side.. The windward side that is the side the wind is blowing from...The leeward side that is the side that has the least wind...
So it's cold and it windy...Where will the predators and the prey animals be? Where would you be if you were out in the elements.. Would you stay or hang out on the windwward side of a hill or on the leeward side of a hill?
The predators and prey will be on the LEEWARD side of the hill when it gets windy. So you the predator caller DO NOT VENTURE TO THE LEEWARD SIDE. that is where the predator are> they are there because the prey is there and it's easier to tolerate the wind.. You need to set up on the Windward side of the hill and call up a hill toward the Leeward side of the hill. The predator will hear your calling and come across the hill and down the windy side of the hill your calling from.
The good thing? More wind less of your scent will reach the incoming predators...However see it's little things like this I use to call in predators during wind that starts at about 15 MP to 20 Plus.. If the wind gust are heavier then that I do not even hunt. If I have to hunt...Like Mosquito Creek....Use this strategy....
As you know since your a grouse hunter too...That the grouse...AKA Prey will be on the Southern Exposure during the daytime.. On nonwindy days for day time predator hunting. Coyotes, Fox, grouse, fieldmice will be in the SOUTHERN EXPOSURE. Keep this hip pocket for day hunting and remember the concept of calling during wind and using the wind to your advanatage..
Also PLEASE don't give up on the sequence thing..If those coyotes are there they will come to your yanking the Chain thing...

Just to give you more of my hunt this past Friday: wind was moderate and blowing across the mountain side I was hunting and I was posted about halfway up (middle) facing down and it was about 2:30pm and the sun was to my left.

So you were hunting the side of a mountain with the wind blowing from the side?
What call did you use mouth or electronics?
Was there crusty snow? If you walked from Point A to Point B to get to the middle of the mountain. the coyotes would have heard you and it was already over....
When calling crusty snow conditions I will get just where it legal and call. Now if you can find a place close to the cabin that has the right terrain based on the the direction of the wind. Somewhere you will not have to walk in real far.. That would be a good strategy too...
I remember that coyote you did call in with the mouth call.. You heard them howling and you called them right too.. Remember if they are there they will come to you.
If you were using the electronic with a remote... Your call should have been at the base of the mountain with the speaker aimed down wind.. You should have posted where you where. in the middle.. You also could have posted the caller in the middle and aimed it down wind or up wind and you posted at the top... The coyotes would come into the wind and go to the loudest part of the speaker. See you would have not been in line.. When it came to the speaker if you set the caller at the base of the mountain you would have gotten a shot from your middle position. It would have come along the base toward and into the speaker.
Now if you aimed it in the middle of the mountain and you posted at the top. If it would have been pointed down wind on the side of the mountain it would have come to the speaker in the middle and into the wind. You would have been at the top and got a shot.
If you placed the speaker facing upwind the coyote would have first got in line with the speaker in the up wind area then it would make a circle and eventually come into the wind in the middle of the mountain.. The arc could have been at the bottom of the base or the top where you where. If while on the top the arc was on the up wind side of you. You might have seen the coyote before it saw you.. If they arc would have been on the down wind side of you on the mountain . You would have been had.
If your mouth calling for coyotes. They know right where the call is coming from...You have to do the howl and move up or down from the spot you called since they will get in line where the sound came from and come into the wind... So when mouth calling you almost have to move from the spot you made each of the sounds after the 8 minute delay or silence...
You can see when calling the side of a mountain...One would do better with an electronic caller with a remote...Like the Primos Powerdogg and or Foxpro FX3 or FX5, or Spitfire, or Fury...
Might want to do the mouth calling on level ground since you can move easier and not have to make noise going up or down from the spot of your calling..
Do you own an electronic caller with a remote?... If not you should get the Foxpro Spitfire or the Primos Powerdogg. They are cheap but are an outstanding coyote calling tool...

I did use an electronic call with a remote but again as you referred, I dont think I was facing the proper way for the arc.
Thanks again UB. I will be using all this information to hopefully bag a coyote.

Start off with Randy Anderson broadcast entitled Howling...
By the way it was Randy Anderson that I happened to have supper with one night.. It was his guidance and the Yanking of the Chain with periods of silence he passed on to me that made me start to call in more Pa coyotes...
There are a lot of good broadcast on this web site...
