I have a 30 plus year old Moss 500. It was a combo deal with the short barrel and pistol grip. It works OK for the Dove, quail, pheasant. I have not gone after turkey out here. I was looking at a couple

Those are all nice shotguns...and I am sure that any of them would do the job you needed done quite well.... But, I am both a "tight-wad", and an 870 fan... So, with that in mind, were it me, I'd pick an 870. Any of the other "extras", such as the pistol grip, buttstock shell holder, etc., can be had with it, or are readily available for it.... But, like with many things, such as trucks for instance (there are Chevy guys, Ford guys, Toyota guys, Dodge guys, etc., etc.), shotguns are the same way... There are Mossberg guys, Remington guys, Winchester guys, Browning guys.... It is more a matter of personal choice and how much you want to pay, than anything else, as to what brand(s) you choose... I won't say that any of them "is better" than another...because to tell you the truth, in these "better quality" shotguns I don't think there is enough actual difference to hang your hat on...they will all do a good job for you...and all can be had with various inserts to change the choke, to tailor it to what your individual need is at that particular time............ Just my opinion, for what it's worth.

  • Interests:Most everything these days can be stated as "formerly". Hunting, fishing, competition shooting, and many days/nights/weeks of camping or other field experience are now relegated to teaching, lecturing, and writing about. Former associate of Maj. Geo. C. Nonte, a firearms testing and evaluation firm that authored many books and articles on hunting, and firearms. The first writer for Shooting Times. All are now grouped into the field of survival, in which the knowledge, familiarization, and ability with all types of weapons are included. I still have to practice what I teach, lecture on, or write about, but, alas, that is getting to be a real difficult thing. The ole bod doesn't take too kindly for much of that activity these days. (But, don't give me even a shirt button at 300 yds, or it's mine!)

Mongo hit the nail right on the head! In picking any firearm,
a whole lot depends upon the person who is looking for it.
There are just so many variables in the minds of people that
no other person can really do more than to express their own
opinion about one, or another.

This holds true whether it is a handgun, rifle, shotgun, or
even a larger bore something. Personal opinion of the person
looking, his pocketbook, what might be available to him, just
what will work for what he intends to use it for, and what he
can find that actually fits him. I might dearly love something
as big as an old eight bore Greener, but would it 'fit' me: my
smaller frame, my arm length, my strength, my pocketbook?
Maybe I like it because someone convinced me. It still all
boils down to what the person is convinced to get. But, it is
his mind that must decide.

For another to say anything he must express it as his own
opinion, and personal likes, as well as to give as good of
supporting reason for his choice. In this way he is not to
blame for a selection by the person where it turns out to be
the wrong thing for him. Expressing an opinion, and giving
your reason(s) that you chose this particular firearm is
about all anyone can do. What you aer trying to say might
be more of a sales pitch, so if that is the case, just be
sure to give the 'cons' as well as the 'pros' regarding
your 'pitch'.
