The predator season started here in Pa at 1201 AM Saturday monring. I have already called in two Eastern Coyotes in my home county...Wow how the populations are spreading.
I was hunting with a new predator caller from another part of our state....We called in a coyote...Before he could get the gun up the coyote was gone...It got in direct line with the call and came into the wind...The hunter was up wind of the call and the coyote smelled him and it was all over...This was night time. We went back and called in the daytime and had no takers...However we walked down into the field were we did call in the coyote...There near picked to the bone was a deer..The coyote was eating when we started calling and he came right from that spot to our calling....
Yesterday I departed at 7:00 PM to the same farm...I was hunting myself and not with anyone....As I entered the farm...Junior the 'sdog started barking at me...I turned around and departed the farm since a barking domestic dog means you will probably not call in a predator for sure.
I traveled a 1/4 of a mile down the road. I near hit a buck with the Saturn....The buck was acting real weird...It would not go into the fields left or right of the road...It walked along with me as I drove by. I kind of thought that was different.
I arrived at the other farm..Got out of the vehicle and a Red Fox started barking at me...Again I said wow normally when I get busted it's after I call not when I drive up....The fox was South of me and the wind was blowing that way so I tried to call it in with negative results... I then heard yet another red fox North of me...It too was barking it's head off. I started to think what is happening here...Buck's walking on the main roads and not wanting to go into the fields.... Two different fox barking....I tried to call this fox in and after abot 30 minutes also failed.. Both fox wanted nothing to do with the dying rabbit or the woodpecker, or the fieldmouse distress sound...
All of a sudden in the distance some poor souls house must have been on fire....The siren blazzed into the night. The emergency vehicles might have been about 2 miles away from me. All of a sudden in the woodlot accross from the field I was hunting the fox in...Two Eastern Coyotes started to howl. This must have been about 500 yards away. Thia is the same farm that we called a coyote in with the other hunter at 1201 AM Saturday morning. It was also the farm that the dog was barking at.
It came to me...The buck was freaked out and surely the coyotes were hunting it...So that is why it did not take off into the fields on my left or right of the road...The two fox's. Yep coyotes freaked them out too. That what all the warning barks were all about. Coyotes were in the area and they were telling every fox in the area to watch out for their number # 1 predator..It was not me tonight...It was the Eastern Coyotes.....
I decided to try to call in the coyotes with my open reed mouth call instead of a manual playing electronic caller that I was using for fox... I decided that I would call along the corn on the side of a hill...The wind was also blowing down from the hill...I knew the coyotes would get in direct line with the sound...Me making the call and come into the wind... As you know when I call coyotes I do not call like when I call fox...When I call fox I let the call just play constant. When calling coyote I do a sound and wait 8 minutes of silence.... I did an Interrogation howl (two howls) and moved from the spot I called and traveled 30 yards to the crosswind side of the wind and where I made the sound. I can hunt in Safety Zones I even got in direct line with the landowners house. Hoping the coyotes would not smell me when they came into the wind and sound source... After 8 minutes nothing showed...I moved back to the calling spot and did a KIYI call for 1 minute. then moved back to the 30 yard crosswind spot..... Nothing appearded after the KIYI sound and the silent 8 minutes. I returned and did a puppy whine for one minute...Worked my way cross wind 30 yards to my sound making....waited 8 minutes of silence....I did another call, moved 30 yards and waited 8 minutes of silence....
All of a sudden it may have been 10 seconds only I saw the coyotes white eyes coming up along the corn like I anticpated. However I got the shotgun up and the coyote was gone.......I tried this strategy to outsmart one of these coyotes and almost got a cigar....I probably would have had to post on her, farmers porch back porch to outsmart this particular coyotes since I already was in direct line with her house....
There is a lot of good info in this post for the Eastern coyote hunter. I have called in 35 Pa Eastern Coyotes to date and I am still being educated by them. Watch for other animals around you to be acting weird....In this case the three animals were Junior the Lab barking on the farm....The buck not wanting to go into the field and stay with me and walk along with my car on the road.
Also the two Red Fox barking warning barks into the night when I did not even get busted yet by them....
Also the sirens on the Emergency vehicles triggered the coyote to howl...This happens all the time so listen for sounds at 12:00 noon of the siren...If coyotes are around they will howl.. Also at night in this case I lucked out and heard the coyotes howling because they got triggered by the emergency vehicle sirens.
Also setting up 30 yards crosswind of the down wind is not enought to outsmart and incoming coyote.. It appears that it either saw my light..(Light Shy) or it smelled me....
I do plan to go back to this farm and play with their brain again...This time, all the corn will be cut down...I also will take a 17 Rem Center Fire Rifle with a Muller illuminated scope...So I do not have to get real close and use a shotgun...Playing with their brain again I will pop them one with the center fire rifle if need be out to 200 yards away....

99er outstanding...Getting it ready for these smart coyotes....Did you ever get a hook to hang it in a bush or tree to enable your remote to work better....I also like to use those Extreme batteries from Energizer too.
I tell you I have plenty of callers....All types but the Primos Powerdogg is one of my favorites for all predators.....

UB,
In addition to predators, that Crow Frenzy will sure drive them crows bannanas. I left Bawanna borrow mine, and he report the Goose call werks right damn good too !!
The little weak it might be in sound volume, is sure as hell makes up for in the calling sounds quality !!

I went out the other night and I called one back again...Now get this it was a full moon so they can see well. He or she comes in 50 yards to me....It, the coyote starts to give me the DREADED WUFF!!!WUFF! WUFF! Now the Wuff is not like a BARK... The Wuff given by a coyote means he or she is telling every coyote in the area that danger is there....With the Full moon and even with the yellow lens I could not see that coyotes eyes..Here it is only 50 yards from me...I have a scoped rifle with an illuminated recticle and the coyotes eyes are not shinning.....
ME THINKS THAT COYOTE WAS WEARING SUNGLASSES???????????????Hence his or her eyes did not shine so I could place a 17 Rem 25 grain HP right between it's eyes..... Yep coyote hunting ...It's Not Just A Hunt It's An Adventure!!!!!!
