Hello all,
I've been keeping the rat population low with my Storm XT air rifle i use Crossman Premier Hollo Points and the standard Center point scope. Any tips? I've heard the Varmint Hunter by Gamo is an excellent choice.

Nick I don't have the Gamo Varmit Hunter, but I have the Gamo Shadow 1000 and I have used it too to keep the Starlings under control. It has shot real well in the 2 years I have had it and accounted for numerous Starlings, Chipmunks and a couple of Crows from my bird feeder. The longest shots I have made with it have been at 80 to 85 yds. from a benchrest. It broke about 3 weeks ago after roughly 2000 rounds and I sent it back to Gamo and for $39.95 they completly rebuilt it.

Nick, glad to have you join us...... There are several of us here who enjoy shooting airguns. I have several myself... I've never had any experience with the GAMO Varmint Hunter, but I've heard some good things about it....... As for "tips"... I would offer this... Before you just "grab a tin of pellets", do some testing... Buy one of the "pellet sampler packs" out there, and give them a try... You will find that pellet rifles, like cartridge firing rifles, usually have a preferrence, and will shoot some pellets more accurately than others........ Something like these.....

Yea I really like the gamo models. I might get one of those Gamo Viper Expresses. They're an air shotgun and a .22 cal air rifle. A tip for all of yoll- Don't use PBA ammo. Stick to lead. When the spring comes forward and pushes the pellet they isn't enough resistance and you end up ruining the seals after time. The faster velocities are not worth a broken gun

Well........ I have several airguns, 3 or 4 are handguns, and the rest are rifles. Without going in the gun room to actually look, I couldn't tell you exactly what I have, off hand.. I believe the only BEEMAN pellet gun I recall having is an R-9 in .20 caliber, with a 3-9 TECH FORCE scope on it. It's a fine rifle, quite accurate, and plenty powerful enough for varmint control and small game hunting to reasonable distances....... But, I just went and looked...and the BEEMAN P-1 is a pistol, and considerably more expencive than any of the pellet pistols I own... Of the air pistols I own, the only ones I would consider powerful enough for varmint control are the CROSMAN 1377-C, a .177 caliber pump-up pistol...and the BENJAMIN EB22, a CO2 .22 caliber pistol... I believe the 1377-C has a higher velocity, but the EB22, with fresh CO2 cartridge, and shooting the larger .22 caliber pellets, probably hits harder... And also, the 1377-C costs probably half what the EB22 does.

I have the 1377. Very fun. if i bought the p1 it would be my most expensive air gun i own. I got the 1377 in Academy one day because i brought back so many memories of when i was a kid- Stalking and "hunting " rats with our friends and the 1377-like pistol was great fun. Look up the Gamo Viper Express you'll be interested i think.

Hummmm... Yes, the Viper Express is an interesting gun...and not priced to expencively....... The only possible problem, at least for me, is that with the way my luck usually runs, I'd probably loose the little adapter that allows you to shoot .22 caliber pellets...then the sales of the gun would be so slow that GAMO discontinues it in a couple of years, and the shot shells along with it....and then I would end up with a gun I couldn't shoot.....I have a couple of old rifles in there now that I can't find ammo for, or when I do it is so expencive that I can't afford to buy it....LOL

And you said, "I got the 1377 in Academy one day because i brought back so many memories of when i was a kid-" ......... Actually, that is part of the reason I bought the one I have... I didn't own one as a kid myself, but one of my best friends back then had a gun very similar to it in appearence, but it was a CO2 pistol (I don't recall exactly what make it was now), and we took all sorts of pests and small game with it... In fact, my friend still carries a pellet in his rear end from that gun, from an "accident" we had one day... He still holds me responsible, altho I was not touching the gun at the time...but he reminds me of it occasionaly still today...but we can laugh about it now, almost a half century later.

LOL Maybe someone Accidentally turned the safety off.
About the Viper Express-True it will probably be discontinued that is a good point. But if i get it im just gonna get 500-1000 rounds of ebay for cheaper.

Well, the gun was laying in the bucket, muzzle up, and as best we could figure, the safety was knocked off by the last apple I tossed in the bucket, and then the next apple caused it to go off... But Fred was up in an old lady's apple tree in her back yard, "borrowing" apples. Fred was picking them, and dropping them down to me, and I was tossing them in the bucket with the gun, when the gun went off...strikeing Fred squarely in the, if I recall correctly, left but-tock.

Just offering a suggestion...but you might look around before you buy off ebay... I have found that while alot of things do sell fairly cheaply on ebay...after you figure in the cost of shipping, sometimes they are more expencive there than just buying the stuff somewhere else with a less expencive shipping fee.... Like I say, this is just a suggestion.

HAHAHAHAHAHA..... Yeah, the Kermit Texas Airgun Club, Airgun Reviews............. If you look closely at the reviews there you will find that two airguns...the Crosman Quest 800X, and the TechForce 99 Magnum...have been reviewed by a gentleman whom we all know and love................. me............HAHAHAHA.

But, there is some good information there on a number of airguns... And the information and reviews have not been done by someone who is "hyping them", making sometimes dubious claims (as is occasionally done in the advertizements), emphasizing the pros, while conveniently "forgetting" the cons, and trying to sell you a gun. The reviews have been done by people who have bought the guns they reviewed, have actual experience with them, and are telling you the honest facts about the specific guns they bought.

luis a .... Welcome to the forum..... As to hunting pigeons with an airgun... It may well depend on where you are located... In most states it is perfectly legal, but in others it may not be... I have been told that in some places pigeons are considered a "game bird" and can only be hunted at certain times during set seasons, and using specified firearms, but in other places they are considered a "varmint", and can be hunted pretty much with anything and at any time....... The only way to know for sure is to check your local state (or national) game laws.... Again, Welcome... Glad to have you join us.

There are some excellent choices out there, in calibers from .177 or BB, up to .50 caliber...and ranging in price from just a few bucks up to over a thousand.... If you are looking for something to use for game/varmints such as the pigeons you spoke of earlier, then something in .177, .20, .22, or .25 calibers would probably suit you best..... The .177 caliber has a good many more offerings in both guns and assorted types/styles/weights of ammo than any other caliber... The .22 caliber, while not offering quite as large a selection as the .177, also has a fairly sizable offering of both guns and ammo... While I am a bit of a fan of the .20 caliber, I must also say that it is not so popular as either the .177 or the .22, and so the selection of guns and ammo is much smaller than for those two..... The .25, while a very good, and hard hitting caliber, is extremely limited in it's selection of guns and ammo, and in many places ammo for it simply can not be found at all. So, for that reason alone I would not consider it....... Personally, I would suggest choosing either a .177, or .22 caliber gun, if for no other reason than the ammo selection is wider and much more easily found for these calibers..... Something else you may want to consider are the various "types" of guns (I am talking basically about rifles here, not particularly handguns)... There are break-barrel, CO2, under-lever, side-lever, pre-charged, pump-up, and possibly others, that I am not familiar with................... But, it all comes down to this... What you want to use the gun for, the "type" you would prefer, and how much you are planning to spend.
